An attempt by a gang of dacoits to rob an independent house at Rajagere village was foiled on Sunday night thanks to the presence of mind shown by the residents of the house and the timely entry by the police.
At around 10.30 in the night ten dacoits approached the house of Nagarajaiah and started making efforts to break the main door with boulders.
Nagarajaiah’s daughter Hema, who woke up hearing the sound dialed 100 immediately. The call was received by the police at the control room in Bangalore who informed the matter to Kunigal police.
Following this, Kunigal police under the leadership of DySP Prabhakar, CPI Balaramegowda and PSI Siddaraju rushed to Rajagere.
Meantime the dacoits were successful in breaking the door open.
While they were making attempts to barge into the house, family members of Nagarajaiah including his wife Jayalaxmi, children Hema, Yashwanth, Narasimhamurthy and relative Shivanna brought ragi and paddy bags from inside and kept them against the broken door.
Women members of the family attacked the dacoits with chilli powder. Male members opposed the dacoits with sharp weapons in their hands. This went on for about 35 minutes. By then the police had arrived.
When the dacoits realised the arrival of the police they fled the scene.
The same gang later went to another house belonging to one Bajjaiah a few yards further and threatened the women folk. However, on hearing the police sirens they ran away.
District SP Dr P S Harsha arrived at the scene with additional staff and patrolled the surrounding areas. He cautioned the villagers to be alert. Senior police officials have appreciated the timely action taken by the family of Nagarajaiah in preventing the crime. They have requested the public to dial 220229 or 100 to inform the police of any crime attempts.
