S K Wadhwa, national additional secretary general, Bharath Vikas Parishad on Monday stressed the need for the Central government to implement a Uniform Civil Code.
Participating in a symposium on ‘Uniform Civil Code,’ he said that the time was ripe for the government to bring the entire people within the umbrella of common civil code, thereby removing all artificial barriers between different segments in the Indian society.
“No other country in the world has a situation similar to the one prevailing in India, The Central government should not be hesitant to implement a uniform civil code,” he said.
“ A Uniform Civil Code will provide clarity and uproot the ground breeding prejudices. The minorities, especially the muslims, who have been objecting to the Uniform Civil Code due to the fear of interference in their personal laws Totalitarian muslim regimes around the world have amended their personal laws in tune with the modern times but secular India is compelled to adhere to such divisive laws,” he added.
He wondered when countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh have changed their laws on oral or triple divorce, why can’t India follow such reforms.
