Forest officials trap tiger in Gonikoppa
DH News Service, Gonikoppa:

The tiger which has been hunting cattle and domestic animals in the South kodagu region for the past three months was caught in Teralu village on Monday night.

The tiger will be sent to Mysore Jayachamarajendra Zoo by the Department of Forest. The Forest department had been working hard to capture the tiger since one week laying trap in Biruga Village but the tiger never came in the areas where the traps were laid, instead it had been killing cattle in other regions.

Last Sunday, the tiger had killed a cow belonging to Karthamadapattu in Teralu village. Alarmed by this, the forest officials transferred the trap from Biruga to Teralu and placed the meat of a dead cattle. The tiger, which came to feast on the meat on Monday night was trapped. The tiger had lost its nails trying to get out of the trap. The tiger kept roaring continuously. On Tuesday afternoon, Mysore Zoo official Dr Nanjappa visited the spot and injected the tiger and controlled it. Later the tiger was put into vehicle along with the trap and was transferred to Mysore.

The tiger is said to be 10 years old and has killed over 30 cattle in the region.

Prior to this, some residents of the region who had lost their cattle demanded that cases filed by the forest officials on some residents must be withdrawn and they must be given good compensation. They said that they would not allow the officials to take the cattle if these demands are not fulfiled. The villagers withdrew their protests only after Deputy Commissioner K R Niranjan assured the villagers over the telephone that their demands will be fulfiled.
