Coffee and pepper growers have become wary of the rains that lash the taluk every night.
Though it has been raining daily, due to the shortage of workers, the robust coffee beans could not be plucked. Hence, coffee beans have started sprouting in some of the plantations. This has affected the yield of robust coffee, while pepper has begun ripening on the creeper. This has created a huge loss to the growers, said State agriculture award winning progressive farmer B C Arvind.
However, the Arabica coffee plantation will benefit from the rains and it is expected to give a good yield. Since the rain may have adverse effects on all crops, farmers will suffer huge losses.
Escaping from the rains has become a serious issue, said taluk Raitha Sangha secretary Jagadeesh. Due to the continuous downpour since the last one week, electricity and telephone lines have also got damaged at various places. Moreover, the rains are accompanied by thunder, causing fear among the people. The rain which began on Saturday morning has affected normal life here.
