Magsaysay Award-winning supercop Kiran Bedi, who recently quit the Indian Police Service two years prior to her superannuation after she was overlooked for the post of Delhi Police chief, on Tuesday said by resigning, she had “freed” herself from injustice.
Ms Bedi will soon be seen as host of a Star Plus show that will aim at pre-litigation arbitrator to resolve disputes between two sides – claimed to be the first of its kind on Indian television. “I freed myself when I realised that I was not getting justice. I did justice to myself when I realised that there was a possibility that I will get subjugated by the system,” Ms Bedi said.
However, she said all young girls who have courage and conviction and want to work selflessly for the society, should try to join the IPS. “There is no better service than this in India. Join the service if you have all these qualities,” she said.
Jocularly saying that the colour of her dress had changed from khaki to black — a reference to her becoming an advocate — Ms Bedi said she agreed to be the host of the soon-to-be-launched Star Plus show called Aap Ki Kachehri because it matched her zeal for “instant justice” with a strong sense of fairness.
The show, said Star Plus CEO Uday Shankar, would take up for arbitration by Ms Bedi are disputes related to relationships, money, inheritance, illicit relationships, senior citizens, women, sexual harassment, dowry, gender discrimination, sibling conflicts, matrimonial disputes, etc.
“The parties involved will be bound by a contractual obligation to abide by the arbitration decision,” Mr Shankar said. No sub-judice and criminal cases would be taken up for consideration in the show, he added.
