Jewellery design course at Manipal
Arun M Isloor

Manipal University started a Bachelor of Business of Administration (BBA) in Jewellery Design and Management in 2005. This 3 years course offered by Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management (MIJM) is the first of its kind in our country.

The course contents have been carefully selected according to the core requirements of the industry and after consultation with many industrial and academic experts. The curriculum includes Management subjects such as Principles of Management, Organisational Behaviour, Computer Applications, Quantitative Techniques, Accounting Practice, International Trade, Legal aspects in Business, Entrepreneurship etc. The recently introduced, application of CAD in Jewellery Designing is another attraction of this course. However practical training is also being given in many fields by experienced faculty. Some specialised subjects are being taught by experts from other institutes and industry experts.

The minimum qualification required for entry to this course is 10 + 2 in any discipline and the candidate has to clear the online entrance test conducted by the University at various centres throughout the country in the first and second weeks of April 2008. In Karnataka centres include Bangalore, Mangalore and Manipal. This 3 year course is divided into 8 semesters and the 8th semester is meant for industrial exposure.

Students are given adequate exposure to many management subjects and are given industrial exposure to gain enough confidence to become successful entrepreneurs. “This course is very interesting. After completion of my bachelor’s degree, I want to pursue MBA in marketing and I have plans to start my own industry,” says Mr Kaushik, a final year student.

After completion of this BBA course, students can go in for an MBA at any University. For more information about the course and admissions contact Prof M M Shanbhag, Director, MIJM at 0820 2922912, 0820 2922929, 09880168032.
