Being himself
Gayathri Nagendra
Cricketer Suresh Raina offered some perky shots to Metrolife.

It's a hot Sunday afternoon; a time when most people would either stay indoors or be out in a mall. The scene at the National Cricket Academy at Bangalore is quite different. Members of the  Indian national cricket team are sweating it out at the nets. Among the players, is a 21-year-old lad practising his shots with as much gusto as if it were an international match.

Fondly called 'Sanu', Suresh Kumar Raina represents the young blood in the national squad -  dedicated, unassuming, stylish with a never-say-die attitude.

The youngster derives his strength from meditation and Yoga.  "I also have a very strict fitness regime and a diet chart," says Raina.

Talking about the dressing room atmosphere, he says, "It has been a very nice experience in the dressing room. We had a great time in Australia. There is no ragging in the dressing room."

On his mentors, he says,  Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are my idols. "I am sharing the dressing room with them at the moment so it's very good for me. I get to learn a lot from them. Yuvraj Singh is a brilliant batsman, so is Dhoni. It's a very good experience for me."

Elaborating on his other activities, he reveals, "I am a very shy person but am extremely fun-loving and love to watch movies. I also do lots of shopping with my friends. Like yesterday, I bought myself an i-Pod speaker here. So basically, I am very bindaas type. As a family person, I am very close especially to my mother and sister. I just gifted my sister a car. My family means a lot to me."

As far as his interests other than cricket is concerned, he tells, "I play basketball and am very good at it. I also play billiards and table tennis. But cricket is my main aim and I want to play for the country. I want to serve the nation as a cricketer."
