The ICICI Bank has been directed by a consumer court to pay Rs 50,000 to a customer whose motorcycle was forcibly repossessed by its loan goons in violation of RBI guidelines, five years ago.
Imposing a cost of Rs 5,000 on the Bank, the New Delhi district president K K Chopra said “The Bank had subjected the complainant to mental agony and harassment and insulted him on the road by forcible repossession of the motorbike using musclemen.”
Anil Jain, a consumer who had taken a loan of Rs 29,000 from ICICI Bank for buying a Hero Honda motorcycle, dragged the Bank to the Forum seeking a compensation for “deficiency of service”.
He alleged that the bank violated RBI rules by repossessing the motorcycle without giving him a notice when a cheque issued for payment of EMI bounced on presentation.
