Aided by a four-goal burst from Magesh and a three-goal effort from Venkatesh, Karnataka State Police made mincemeat of a hapless Reserve Bank of India to score a thumping 11-1 win in a Pool C match of the Travancore Cup hockey tournament at the KSHA stadium here on Thursday.
Magesh found the target in the sixth, ninth, 39th, and 45th minutes and Venkatesh scored in the 41st, 43rd and 46th minutes.
The policemen took a healthy 3-0 lead even before RBI could settle down. Former KSP skipper Laxman Rao started the goal glut two minutes into the match with a deflection from a cross from the left from Hari.
Magesh then took centrestage. First, the KSP forward cut through the left and placed the ball to the left of RBI goaltender Youraj. He then showed good presence of mind to pounce on a rebound after a hit from Parmesh cannoned off Youraj’s pads.
Rao, whose reverse hit from just inside the striking circle found the net in the 19th minute, and Parmesh, who scored seconds before half time with a similar drive, helped KSP gain a commanding 5-0 lead at the break. RBI got one back five minutes into the second period from their first penalty corner. Thanunanjappa, who earned the short corner, sounded the board with a powerful hit to beat KSP custodian Naveen.
The goal proved a wake-up call for the Cops, who appeared a little complacent after the lemon break. In the 39th minute, Magesh made it 6-1 when he deflected in a long pass from Umesh Mudgar, before netting his fourth goal six minutes later. Venkatesh, who got his first goal in the 41st minute, scored twice after that and Mudgar pierced the RBI defence in the 48th.
