Prayers, devotion, colour mark three festivals
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Fervent prayers and family get-togethers marked the celebrations of the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed by Muslims in the City. Some chose to don new clothes and eat varieties of biryani at home while others opted to indulge in altruistic activities.

As Id Milad-un-Nabi is regarded as an occasion to reflect on the teachings of the Holy Prophet, the young and old alike opted to spend more hours performing namaz and reading the Quran at mosques.

.The Jumma Masjid Road Traders Association began the celebrations last night by distributing sweets to everyone who attended the night prayers, said Shabbir, who runs a sweet shop on Jumma Masjid road.

Good Friday
Christians in the city observed Good Friday by paying tributes to Jesus Christ who was crucified on this day two thousand years ago.

They gathered in large numbers at their respective churches across Bangalore where special prayers were offered. At St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral near Coles Park, after the recitation of Bible was over, Arch Bishop of Bangalore Diosis Reverend Bernard Moras addressed the gathering.

He said, an advertising agency in the west when asked how to propagate Christianity, suggested to do away with the Cross symbol as it denotes suffering and pains.

He reminded people that Cross is not a shame as some people try to project but it reminds of the sacrifices of Jesus.

Holi fever
The Holi fever gripped  many parts of the City on Friday though the main Holi festival will be celebrated on Saturday.

From Friday afternoon the preparations began for burning the bonfire in the night, a symbol of burning all the evils in the heart and purifying it with virtues. Later, people started playing Holi by applying colours on each other. From the afternoon onwards the ceremonial Nagada (drums) beating was started.

Punjabis too celebrated Hola Mohalla, similar to the burning of Holi, the bonfire.

On Saturday besides Holi, Kamannana Habba would be celebrated by the Kannadigas .
