He was speaking on Water Conservation and Rain Harvesting Techniques in a programme organised by Corporation Bank Economic Development Foundation on Thursday.
According to a press release, Mr Padre said that people have a tendency to take this resource for granted and realising little about the consequences of continued neglect of this precious resource. He observed that modern man seemed to think that water is abundant in its availability which was not true in most places. Opining that over exploitation, creation of impermeable surfaces in urban areas such as roads, cementing of yards surrounding houses, removal of vegetation has lead to drying of under ground water table. Coastal areas which receive heavy rainfall offers excellent scope for rain harvesting by use of simple techniques such as pits, recharging of old and un-used wells directly and growing vegetation in the surroundings of our habitats, Mr Padre said and gave a call to the people to be more “water literates” by knowing more about rainfall, its measurment and conservation.
The awareness programme was inaugurated by a renowned social activist and a member trustee of Corporation Bank Economic Development Foundation Dr K R Shetty. Corporation Bank General Manager K Ramamurthy, Deputy General Manager K Raghav Kamath and others were present.
