SEATO no military alliance: Dulles
WASHINGTON, March 22.
Mr John Foster Dulles, the US Secretary of State, told India’s Vice-President, Dr S Radhakrishnan, that the South-East Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO) did not intend to convert itself into a military alliance on the lines of the NATO. Dulles said SEATO, of which Pakistan and the US are members, did not intend to create a military force of its own, to be held in readiness in case of aggression.
8-point Plan for productivity drive
NEW DELHI, March 22.
The first meeting of the National Productivity Council here today laid down an eight-point programme for launching a productivity drive in the country.
The council decided that initial, its activities and those of the local councils in different parts of the country should be limited to the sphere of industry, though the productivity drive would eventually cover all economic activities.
A committee is to be set up to conduct a survey of the productivity personnel in the different fields.
South CMs’ council ‘a threat to nation’
BANGALORE, March 22.
Mr M Veerappa Moily, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, has found a “threat” to national integration in the move to form the Council of Chief Ministers mooted by the Southern Chief Ministers’ Conference.
He told newsmen here today that such a council was “unwarranted” and it might lead to “conflict between the States and the Centre.”
