Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Vijender and Dinesh Kumar booked berths in the Beijing Olympics after reaching the finals of the Asian Boxing Qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Saturday.
While Vijender thrashed Iranian Amiri Homayon 19-13 in the middleweight category, Dinesh (81kg) outscored Mandakhbayar of Mongolia.
The duo’s qualification takes the total number of Indian boxers in Beijing Olympics to four after AL Lakra (57kg) and Akhil Kumar (54kg) booked places in previous qualifying events.
Vijender, will next take on Korean Cho Deok Jin, while Dinesh will now be up against Iranian Ghorbani Mehdi in the finals to be held on Sunday.
Meanwhile, another national champion Dilbag Singh inched closer to Olympic qualification as he entered the finals of welter weight category. Dilbag beat Japan's Hirano Yoshiyuki and will now take on Turkmenistan's Bashirov Aliasker in the finals on Sunday where only a win would fetch him a ticket to Beijing. However, there was disappointment for India in other categories.
In 51kg, Jitender was trailing 3-11 against Kazakhstan's Sarsembayev Mirat before he retired. The Haryana-pugilist still has a chance to qualify as he gets to fight a playoff against Philippines' Castro Godfrey for a third Olympic quota place up for grabs in his category.
In 64kg, Manoj Kumar lost 8-15 to Kyrgyzstan's Madaminov Akmatali. Praveen (+91kg), who suffered a lip cut, withdrew in his bout against Kazakh Ruslan Myrsatayev.
