Even as attempts are on to usher in high technology in all possible spheres at railway stations in the City, a basic problem like stray dogs loitering around stations remains unsolved.
It is indeed a frightening sight for a passenger with a lot of baggage to have a the canines eyeing them like a juicy meal at the City station, Yeshwantpur, Cantonment and Bangalore East railway stations. The problem is even more acute at the Cantonment station and the Bangalore East station which are shelter for atleast 20 street dogs.
The Cantonment station has a disadvantage of having a Veterinary hospital in its vicinity. “The BBMP brings dogs from various parts of the City for sterilisation here and then abandon them in the vicinity,” many Railways officials alleged.
A top railway official said, “there are many incidents of dog bites at Cantonment.” Even the top brass at South Western Railway has experienced it. One dog attacked General Manager Praveen Kumar when he visited the station to inspect the premises some months ago.
There are a fewer incidents of dog bites at Bangalore East station probably due to the lesser crowd. Divisional Railway Manager Mahesh Mangal said, “The Railways is not empowered to do anything about them and the BBMP has to come to our rescue.”
Following the death of a child due to stray dog attack, BBMP cleared dogs from all stations. But now things are back to normal, he said. BBMP officials were not available for comment.
