On the eve of Bhutan’s first ever democratic elections, the country’s top election official exuded confidence that the transition from monarchy to democracy in the country would take place in a smooth manner.
“Hopefully everything goes on well. A smooth conduct of the polls will be a great satisfaction for me,” said Wangdi. Though all has not gone according to plans, Wangdi feels that at least something has started. “Gradually we’ll evolve ourselves,” he said.
Noting that India’s democratic set-up helped a lot in Bhutan’s transition, Wangdi said the negative aspects of its neighbour’s policies gave the administration a chance to adopt the best possible measures. He also lauded India’s poll set-up. Incidentally, Electronic Voting Machines from India will be used for Monday’s polls.
