India’s sophisticated Agni I missile was successfully test fired on Sunday from the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO)’s missile test range located at the Wheelers Island inside the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Orissa’s Bhadrak district.
Sources in the Bhadrak district administration said, the sleek 15 metre-tall surface to surface missile was test fired at 10.15 am from a mobile launcher parked in the launch pad number four of the test range. The indigenously built missile which has the capability to hit a target at a distance of 700-800 km can carry both conventional as well as nuclear warheads weighing up to 1000 kg.
The Agni I which has already been inducted into the Indian army was last test fired in October, 2007. This was the second user trial of the sophisticated missile. Defence ministry officials, scientists from the DRDO and officials from the Bhadrak district administration were present during the test firing of the missile, sources in the Bhadrak district administration informed.
