Cotton crop worth nearly Rs 20 crore has been lost due the unseasonal rains in the Mumbai-Karnataka region over the last three days. Cotton crops in nearly 40,000 acres of land are yet to be harvested, but the yield is certain to be hit.

The Malaprabha river was in spate and submerged a low-bridge at Konnur in Nargund taluk of Gadag district, while the Hubli-Bijapur road was completely cut-off.

The rain fury claimed an eight-year-old girl’s life in Bidargaddi village of Bailhongal taluk in Belgaum district. The girl, identified as Kalavathi Maruthi Kollur, died after she was trapped under the debris of a house which collapsed.

In Bijapur district, one person was killed when a tree fell on him at Bagewadi town in the wee hours of Sunday when he had gone to answer nature’s call. The victim has been identified as Sangamesh Basalingappa Golasangi (28).

Vineyards spread over several hundred of acres have borne the brunt of the rain fury in Bijapur district and the damage to the crop has been put at Rs 2 lakh.

Instances of house collapse have been reported from Haveri and Gadag districts too. Rain has destroyed standing crops in hundreds of acres of fields in Gadag district. Scores of streams in Gadag district like Bennihalla, Irabihalla, and others were in spate.
