Dell Inc., the world’s second-largest maker of personal computers, plans to start selling low-cost models in India to sustain accelerating sales growth.
The Round Rock, Texas-based company will market the cheaper PCs from the middle of next month, Dell India Vice President Rajan Anandan told reporters, in New Delhi, on Monday. He didn’t provide a price or other details.
Sales in India rose 60 per cent last year to $700 million, Mr Anandan said adding Dell’s sales of PCs in India gained 80 per cent in the fourth quarter ended February.
Dell, which operates a factory in Tamil Nadu, will increase the manufacturing capacity of desktop computers there, he said. The computer maker has no plans to sell its back-office operations, which provide customer service by telephone and through the Internet, in India.
Dell plans to hire 1,000 people for its back-office operations in three months, said Dell International Services Managing Director Ganesh Lakshminarayanan. PC sales in India grew 11 percent to 3.28 million units in the six months ended Sept. 30 from a year earlier, according to Mait.
