HOCKEY / Travancore Cup
Pradeep stars in KSP win
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Riding on a brace from Pradeep, Karnataka State Police (KSP) defeated Army Service Corps (ASC) 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the Travancore Cup hockey tournament here on Monday.

The win, which helped KSP top Group C, earned them a last-eight clash with ITI. Despite the defeat, ASC also qualified for the knockout phase by virtue of their second-place finish in the the group and will take on the formidable Canara Bank.

In the last match of Phase II, runners-up KSP gave a good account of themselves with Pradeep coming out with swift attacking moves. However, the Policemen hit a roadblock in ASC custodian Lakar who excelled under the bar by coming up with a couple brilliant saves. If not for Lakar's bravura, ASC would easily have conceded half-a-dozen goals.

After a dull first half in which action was restricted to the midfield, KSP upped the tempo in the second for which they were finally rewarded in the 48th minute. Lakar paid the penalty for advancing too far as Rathod, instead of taking on Lakar, relayed the ball to an unmarked Pradeep who tapped the ball in with consummate ease. Minutes later, Pradeep got a chance to swell the lead, but he shot wide.

However, KSP got the comfort goal in the 55th minute through a penalty. The stroke was awarded when ASC's Bhengra, in an attempt to clear the ball off a penalty corner, deflected the goal-bound ball onto his leg. Pradeep converted from the spot to round off KSP's tally.

PCTC score

Earlier, Pioneer Corps and Training Centre scored a 2-0 win over Rail Wheel Factory to top Group B and set up a last-eight clash with SAI 'A'. Cyprian Aind (14th) and Mundu (38th) scored for the winners. RWF, who also made it to the knockout phase, will take on Army XI.

The quarterfinal matches will be played on Wednesday after a day's rest on Tuesday.

Quarterfinal line-up:
Canara Bank vs ASC; KSP vs ITI; PCTC vs SAI ‘A’; Army XI vs RWF.
