Honour for BMTC chief
Bangalore, dhns:

Rotary Club of Bangalore Midtown and the Prestige Group on Wednesday conferred the seventh edition of the ‘Citizen Extraordinaire Award’ 2008 to Upendra Tripathy, managing director of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
The award was conferred by Mr Irfan Razack, chairman of the Prestige Group and Rtn Rajendra Rai, the district governor, 3190. Principal Secretary to Transport Department D Thangaraj was present at the investiture ceremony.
The BMTC was shortlisted among several individuals and institutions to acknowledge the revolutionary changes that have been implemented by the profit making state transport undertaking to improve and offer world class public transport facilities to the people of the city.
Receiving the award, Mr Tripathy said, “Today, 38 lakh commuters of Bangalore commute by 5000 buses. We propose to have 10,000 city buses plying in the next four to five years” he said.
The BMTC chief added that a proposal to have autos and taxis ferry commuters from their homes to the nearest airport ‘Volvo’ point is on the cards, for which tenders would be called.
“These vehicles will be equipped with a Geographical Positioning System (GPS) and other commuter friendly
measures” Mr Tripathy added.

There is no logic in this award. BMTC busses are one of the major cause of traffic snarls and accidents. You rarely find them stopping at designated bus stops. They are always parked parallel to each other thus using majority of the road, you always find them in the fast lane going at the speed of a tractor. I have been in BLR for 8 years now and there is absolutely no improvement in BMTC service, only that there are more busses on the roads but no management.
