Inculcating scientific temper among youngsters has always been the motive of T L Ramakrishna, a retired officer from the Geological Survey of India. With this aim in mind, he started the Bharat Geo Guides which began producing charts, geographic models, CDs, and practical models to serve the student community.
“It is my aim to bring students very close to nature and make them conscious of their environment. For this they must have a basic knowledge in Geography and Geology. I do hope that my charts and other products can make these subjects more student friendly,” said Ramakrishna.
Besides making teaching an easy affair, these charts helps give students a focus with its colourful graphical and pictorial representation of facts. “Since penetration into students mind is made all the more easy by these charts, teachers can transform learning into a hassle free affair,” says Ramakrishna.
To teach mineral and rock formation, Ramakrishna has brought out many charts. These charts specifically give information about how rocks are formed, what their age is, the various changes they under went in the course of time, etc.
Rocks speak their own language. They are indeed the best archaeologists. The past environment — high temperature, drought, flood, ice, life — is well recorded in rocks as fossils. You can have a mini-museum at school if you buy a mini mineral rock kit. It will provide a first hand experience of those rocks which are rare to see.
“With the recent tsunami, changes on the earth and ocean surfaces have been part of public interest. To enhance their curiosity, we have brought out earth models where its crest and mantle are clearly identified. Besides that, the inner part of the earth is ripped apart and shown to the pupil,” says Ramakrishna.
The origin of the earth and its evolutionary span is clearly represented using a chart. Besides giving various changes on the surface of the earth, this chart also provides information on various animal and plants which appeared on earth. “I do hope that these representations can help students remember facts and the learning process is made easier,” said Ramakrishnan.
As part of teaching various changes on the earth surface, Bharat Geo Guides has brought out three dimensional models of rivers, volcanoes, and cliff formations.
The charm of physical geography is that it can be observed. Much of what is seen is a dynamic manifestation of the geology and geomorphology of the area.
