Delivering the inaugural address of the one-day workshop on ‘Coastal erosion and siltation in navigation channels: Remedial measures and management’ organised by the Mangalore University Department of Marine Geology at University College in Hampankatta here on Wednesday, he said that sea barriers and break water systems are effectively able to control sea erosion, though it takes away the beauty of the beaches.
Speaking on the occasion, NITK former professor J Dattatreya said that there is no permanent solution to sea erosion, as all man made constructions are temporary. He later stressed the need to have coastal zone management than building sea barriers along the coast, which was supported by Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa who spoke later.
Stating that natural disasters can not be avoided, the VC said that we just have to face them. He attributed the increasing strength of the waves to global warming and rise in the sea water level.
