Physics defines centrifugal force as the force that tends to pull a body moving along a circular path towards the centre of the circle. All schools of philosophy describe the innermost core of man as “divinity”, “bliss” etc, which is synonymous with the “soul” or “atman”.
In perhaps a fusion of the physical and metaphysical, in this fast paced world of “more” and “yet more”, man seems to be drawn inwards by the force of religion and spiritualism as reflected in the number of temples and other places of worship that have sprung up and continue to come up at all places.
Being omnipresent, the smallest nook, crevice or the narrowest intersection will make do for the supreme one to make his presence felt. The ubiquitous Ganapati seems to be the most preferred deity. The shade of a peepal tree, the pillar supporting the gate of a house or the junction of three roads all serve as shelters for this much loved god.
The approach sections on either side are considered as two separate roads while the road that intersects it is the third. So there, right in the middle sits the “lord of the three worlds”.
The morning rush hours see school children bending their already bent backs before the idol while two wheeler riders pause for a moment, fold their hands in prayer, drop a coin or two into the plate that is conveniently held out and hurry on, all without getting down from their vehicles. Others touch their cheeks and plant a kiss on their knuckles while those with time to spare, wait for a small pooja. And there, at the entrance with a garland on his neck sits the lord, welcoming visitors with his polished and gleaming hands.
Now though, we have the “mobile gods”. In keeping with this “readymade and instant” age, god seems to have decided to literally come to the doorsteps of his devotees. An open jeep, the back of a lorry or even a pushcart serves as his vehicle.
Bedecked with flowers, a plate of fruits in front and incense spreading a heady fragrance, he comes with loudspeakers blaring out devotional songs. God sure knows how to move with the times. So while we journey on this merry go round of life, this “godlifugal force” seems to be pulling us towards the core.
