The education department’s decision to make BEd mandatory for appointment of Pre-University (PU) lecturers has been kept on hold, and will be taken up only after a popular government is elected to power.
A decision to this effect was taken after MLCs (those from teachers’ constituencies) met Governor Rameshwar Thakur in Bangalore on Wednesday and urged him to stay the decision.
“As per the Governor’s direction, the operation of the order will be kept on hold,” Primary and Secondary Education Secretary T M Vijayabhaskar said here today.
Hitherto, a post-graduation degree was sufficient for teaching Pre University students. However, in February this year, the education department issued orders making BEd mandatory for appointment as PU lecturers.
According to the notification, a four-year time frame was to be given to all fresh appointees to apply and complete their BEd, failing which their appointments would be cancelled.
However, there was stiff opposition to the move. Teachers argued that BEd course has no relevance for the pre-university and that they had not been consulted before finalising the new rule.
