The MYSTERY of the email that STUCK!
Andaleeb Wajid
Preeti was flummoxed. When she slapped her forehead for the third time that evening, her friend Reena looked up from the bed where she had been thumbing a comic.

'What's up?' she asked Preeti casually.

'I'm trying to email the pictures of last week's trekking trip to my grandmother. And each attachment is about 1 to 2 MB and so the entire email has become very heavy. The mail is just not going!'

'Why don't you upload the pictures on a photosharing website and send your grandmother the link?' Reena suggested.

'What's that? I don't think I can spend time learning something new! I just want to show these pictures to Ajji. If she lived in Bangalore, I would have just gone over to her and shown it to her. But with her living in Delhi…gosh…and she really loves seeing our latest photos!' Preeti explained.

Reena shook her head. 'There's nothing new to learn about photosharing.' Saying so, she got up and came near the computer. She sat down and took over from Preeti.

'There are plenty of websites where we can upload our pictures and share it with our friends. There's Flickr which is easy to use if you have a Yahoo ID. You also have Snapfish, Shutterfly and Photobucket. Which do you want?'

'Doesn't make a difference as long as it does what I want it to!' Preeti muttered.

Reena smiled and typed out the address of Snapfish. They had to register at the site and Reena showed her how to create an album. Preeti realised she could upload all her pictures in the album in one shot. However, it was a bit slow going. When all the pictures were uploaded, Reena showed her the Share link on the right-hand side of the page and asked her to click on it.

'Type your grandmother's email address and you can even enter a personal message in this box here below the email address box. Once you're done, just click on Share Album and that's it!'

'That's it?' asked Preeti surprised. 'How will Ajji get the photos?'

'She'll get an email from Snapfish and there will be a link which she has to click. Once she clicks that link, she will be taken to this website, where she can see all your pictures!'

'This is great!' Preeti exclaimed. 'But will she have to use this link all the time to see the pictures? She has a dial-up connection and not broadband like us, and she plugs in only to check her emails.'

'No problem! She can save the pictures into her computer and view them whenever she wants without getting connected to the internet.'

'Gosh, I'm going to put up all my pictures here!! This is amazing!' Preeti said happily.

Reena smiled and shook her head. 'Just remember, in some of these photosharing websites, you can choose a 'private' option where only those you invite can see your pictures. If you use the 'public' option, then anyone in the world can see the pictures.'

'Anything else I need to know?' Preeti asked her.

'Well, its better if you remember these pointers too…

1.   Upload only those pictures that you are comfortable with.

2.  Always take the permission of others who happen to be in your pictures, before uploading the pictures for 'public' viewing.

3.  Don't upload anything that can embarrass anyone else. It might seem funny to you, but it probably isn't.' Reena enumerated.

'Done!' said Preeti looking excited.

'What are you doing now?' Reena asked her.

'Creating new albums of all the pictures I have on my computer!' she replied.
