Voluntary service organisations must lay emphasis on developing skills among the handicapped children along with fulfilling their educational needs, said deputy commissioner K R Niranjan. Speaking at the valedictory function of the skill development training programme organised for handicapped children under the joint aegis of the Central government, Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped, Bangalore and NABARD near Suntikoppa ‘Swastha’ special education and rehabilitation centre, he said the society must not look down upon the handicapped individuals. They must be given equal opportunities in all fields instead of showing sympathy.
The skill development programmes help the handicapped children become physically as well as mentally apart from developing their skills. It helps them opt for self-employment and lead an independent life, he pointed out.
Lauding the service rendered by the Swastha institute for the all-round development of the handicapped children, the he assured that the district administration will provide necessary help to such organisations.
Tata Coffee Ltd Managing Director M H Ashraf said the handicapped children will be identified and provided necessary training in order to bring them to the mainstream of the society. Coorg Foundation President Prof Arun Monappa, presided over the programme.
