Be a haute mommy!
Todays expectant mothers, unlike their yesteryear counterparts, need not look frumpy in tent-like wear anymore. Maternity fashion is booming like never before, says Meera Seshadri

Gone are the days when expectant mothers, especially the fashion fiends, kept a low profile, shunning all parties and other social events, during those months of pregnancy. But today, the modern belle doesn’t baulk at showing off her bulging belly, as she steps into the mum-to-be league! And why not? When there are several brands like Mothercare, Just Maternity, Just Moms, Fab India, etc, vying with each other to dish out their haute couture maternity lines, to pump up the glam quotient in the pregnant women!

Which means, today’s expectant mothers, unlike their yesteryear counterparts, needn’t look like tacky maternity tents anymore! For, there are umpteen ways to look sensuous n’ stylish even during pregnancy! (Remember Preity Zinta who created fashion ripples in Salaam Namaste with those magnificent maternity outfits!)
To begin with, as you join the Mom-To-Be Inc, just invest in jeans, capris, skirts that come with soft, stretchable panels, attached at the waist. (These special maternity robes are available as part of aforesaid brands). These panels, apart from proffering flexibility, do support your growing belly. What’s more, you can use these dresses even after the childbirth, by whipping off the panels!

These skirts/pants can be teamed with myriad varieties of stretch tees and dreamy tops. In fact, you can get few tailored too. Do opt for the cooler n’ lighter fabrics with sturdy knits. And remember to steer clear of ‘restrictive fits’ that give you an uncomfy feel, also those dowdy ‘ultra-loose ones’ that makes you appear frumpish! A good bet here would be, to go for tops with teeny gathers, cowls, ruches, which help in drawing attention towards shoulders. Besides, these delectable tops with dainty folds even try hiding the belly bulge unlike the rib-crunching ones.

Stretch trousers

Yet another haute dress option during pregnancy would be, sporting of stretch trousers clubbed with tops, having ‘empire waistlines’. These trendy tops have good camouflaging effect, since they de-emphasise the expanding waistline by shifting focus elsewhere. They are quite comfy too, as they softly slither over the swollen belly! Stylish ponchos paired with stretch capris is yet another hip n’ happening dress option in maternity clothes. Incidentally, you can spot some of the mom-to-be glitterati posing for the fashion mags with their protruding belly, donning these pretty ponchos! You can get funky with a single-shouldered poncho, or pick the ones with sequins/crystals for that bling touch.

Camisole tops

You can even try camisole-styled tops (spaghetti-strapped tops with downward flare) on stretch trousers/culottes. Besides slickly disguising those months of pregnancy, it cuts a ravishing image of yours! Even long n’ loose tunics look equally elegant on stretch-panelled denim pants. This style option is lapped up by both fashionistas and comfort-mongers. These two tops, mentioned above, are ideal for those, who aren’t comfy flashing their bellies. In case you have no hang-ups flaunting it, then opt for a dressy top on wrap-around skirts, which are customizable to your changing body growth.

You can also try the single-piece knee-length cotton dress, if you can carry off the style. Choose the fabrics with small dark prints against neutral-coloured backdrop. Ooze oomph by gently belting the dress with a fancy sash, made of the same fabric. You can even spin your charm around with breezy short kurtas on floor-length flared skirts. These ethnic apparels that seamlessly weave comfort and fashion together, do add appealing accent to your femininity. They cloak the hump too!

In case you feel elasticized skirts have galling effect on your skin, then opt for skirts that come with drawstrings. Remember, you can even team these swishy long skirts with matching corsets with               beautiful necklines, to unleash that bohemian babe in you! You can subtly conceal the belly bulge with a stylish stole or a veil. While choosing footwear, go for ones with good arch support to avoid a faltering step. You can try flip-flops that are quite comfy too.
