The future belongs to those, who believe in the beauty of their dreams, said Eleanor Roosevelt. Helping women entrepreneurs live their dreams is Navodai, a support group for women by women. And what better month than March to do so. It's Women Day today and to uphold the spirit of this special day, the Navodai exhibition-cum-sale 2008 will have on display clothing, crafts, jewellery, jute items, edibles and more on March 13.
Navodai is the answer to the question that most women entrepreneurs (small-scale or home-based) have - where do I sell my products without incurring the high overheads? How do I build my clientele base? Can I eliminate the middleman, and make a little more?
Prema Sundaram, who founded Navodai in 2003, says, "While these women are very talented in ideas and execution, what they lack is the forum to exhibit their talents and technical guidance".
A travel and tourism freelancer, Prema, through Navodai and as a member of the Lioness Ladies of Somesvarpur, and St. John's Church Women Fellowship, is involved in helping women be self-sufficient, financially or emotionally. She has discovered that for the 41 members, Navodai symbolises independence.
The Navodai exhibitions are an opportunity, at a nominal cost, to market items manufactured by the women at home or in the small scale sector. At these displays, some creditable NGOs are also given free tables. "We wish to reach out to women and artisans living in the rural areas, offering them low cost outlets for sales in urban markets."
Another new initiative from Navodai is the training that is given to help the women entrepreneurs multiply resources, such as network marketing. Navodai has its sales at different venues around the city, for the benefit of suppliers and customers in different areas. On March 13, it is at the V.R. Plaza near Commercial Street.
