Even with hundred different cuisines making their presence felt in Bangalore, authentic Mughalai food remains a weakness with many. And catering to this void with its Mughalai speciality is the Nawab, the North Indian speciality restaurant in Hotel Solitaire, which is located at Kumara Krupa Road.
The nawab has some distinct items on its menu in both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. While the menu is usually ala carte, there is a vegetarian and a non- vegetarian thaali available, to distinguish it from the buffets available in most other hotels. The vegetarian dishes have specialities like ‘Awadhi Khadwai’, which is a Lucknow homestyle food of besan, cooked in sour gravy; ‘Zanat-e-numa’, Zafrani style cottage cheese cooked in special zafrani gravy; and ‘Hing dhaniya ka sarla aloo’, which is small round potatoes tampered with asafoetida and carom seeds. The thali seems to be a great option to opt for, as there are variety of dishes, and many new items to try out.
For non- vegetarians, there are dishes like ‘Shan-e-sajan’, which is saffron flavoured breast of chicken spiced with black cumin; ‘Khade masale ka stew’, mutton cooked with whole awadhi species in rich onion gravy, and ‘Nizami Murgh’, chicken marinated in raw onion paste, lemon and simmered in brown onion gravy. The biryanis, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian are innovatively presented in a wrapped ‘matka’, which is broken open at the table. There are also an array of desserts available to choose from.
So if you haven’t tasted authentic Mughalai cuisine for some time, it looks like the right time to savour the taste of this rich and delicious cuisine.
