Speed racer
Robert L Sungte
English(U)
Cast: Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Matthew Fox
Director: Larry Wachowski, Andy Wachowski

Remember the Matrix series? Well, this film comes from the same guys — the Wachowski Brothers.

The film is an adaptation of the 1960’s Japanese classic anime series Speed Racer. Growing up around racing cars, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is ready to make it big. Aggressive and fearless his only real competition is the memory of dead brother, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is supported by his family who are into racing business, led by his dad, Pops Racer (John Goodman).

When Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret — some of the biggest races in the last 50 years were being fixed by people who manipulate top drivers. Royalton see to it that the Mach 5, with Speed in it, never wins. Speed must save his family’s business and the sport he loves by beating Royalton at his own game. With his family and girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci) by his side, Speed is ready to take the challenge.

Sadly, the film is overloaded with special effects. Actors have few things to do — except sit in the driver’s seat.

The cinematography is filled up by computers later. If this is not enough, the script is poorly written. Fans of the Speed Racer series would be left dissapointed.

Attempts to stay true to the original only make things worst. Frenetic action care race and vivid colours from the cartoon are there which gives the movie a stylish look. However, the film’s technical prowess becomes a liability instead of an asset. The racing scenes is so stylised and artificial looking, that there’s no real suspense. The Wachowskis have failed to entertain children, for whom this film was primarily made. The flashbacks, opening scenes are mighty confusing for youngsters. However, the story is easy to follow— that’s because there is not much to it. The film proves that computer toys and high speed racing cars are pretty dull without involving human characters. Watch it as a tribute to the original series.
