As many as 1,828 criminal cases, including 880 cases relating to seizure of liquor have been filed and Rs 21.04 crore cash confiscated in the assembly constituencies which to poll in the first phase, Chief Electoral Officer M N Vidyashankar said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters he said large quantity of liquor has been seized from Yeswanthpur area. During the last 24 hours, as many as 38 criminal complaints on poll violation have been received and large quantity of sarees and T-shirts besides some cash have been seized allegedly meant for distribution among voters, he said.

There had also been complaints that people had been lodged in marriage halls in Malleswaram and R T Nagar for bogus voting. However, when the electoral officers rushed to the spot, no such assembly of people could be found.

All election related complained received on the telephone line 22219999 would be attended to within 15 minutes, he assured.

In Tumkur, police received a complaint alleging that people were brought from Andhra Pradesh and lodged in a marriage hall in Pavagada to create trouble during polling.

Complaints of some candidates holding public meetings rallies after 5 pm on Thursday in violation of the EC’s direction had also been received and being probed he said. Complaints of mass SMS urging the electorate to vote a particular candidate had been received from Rajajinagar on Friday.

The EC has received several complaints expressing apprehension over booth capturing, rigging and bogus voting.
To thwart irregularities, videographers will be engaged in all 89 assembly segments going to the polls on Saturday. Digital cameras had installed in some sensitive polling stations, he added.

Bogus voting

He warned bogus voting is a punishable offence with imprisonment up to one year and criminal cases would be booked against those indulging in proxy or bogus voting. Cases would be booked under section 171-D of the Indian Penal Code which states that impersonation at an election is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with fine or with both, he added.

More than one lakh polling personnel will be engaged on Saturday and reports that they had reached their respective polling stations were pouring in, he said.
