State govt should empower the Lokayukta
Sir, There seems to emerge a ray of hope in investigating into the charges of corruption and misconduct among bureaucrats at the higher echelons of the government and politicians given the vesting of suo motu powers with the Karnataka Lokayukta. This decision had been pending announcement for long.
More essential than the grant of the special powers to the Lokayukta, it is the quick implementation of legal actions recommended by him against cankerous officials caught red-handed that can be effective in checking corruption in the state.

MK’s golden jubilee
Sir, It is a misnomer that Karunanidhi has completed 50 years as a legislator and it is preposterous to celebrate the occasion. Between 1957 and 2007, there were at least three years’ of President’s rule in Tamil Nadu, following the split in ADMK.
Also, Karunanidhi didn’t take oath in the assembly in 1991 as an MLA; nor did he attend any session. When the whole state is in turmoil over the battle to succeed him, it isn’t hard to guess Karunanidhi’s dismay, as he is being felicitated.

Save the common man
Sir, The struggle over inheriting the leadership of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of Tamil Nadu from Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has claimed innocent lives.
The violence has marred press freedom. The price people pay for this struggle is proving costly.
The Sainiks in Mumbai clashed on leadership, while the TDP too was embroiled in a struggle. Save the common man, respect the press, after all politics is all about people.

Right to normal life
Sir, It is high time now, that a group of like-minded people from the legal fraternity approach the judiciary, representing the hapless common man and fight for his rights to lead a normal life.
The rights of Indian citizens are blatantly denied by our politicians, politically motivated groups, caste-based groups etc, causing misery to common man, especially by indulging in road and rail blocks, bundhs and hartals.

People need correction
Sir, This refers to Save Bangalore move launched (DH, May 10). Not long ago, former Chief Minister S M Krishna said he would turn Bangalore into Singapore.
Now, we say that Bangalore has to be saved. This is because almost all people, in every walk of life, have no discipline or civic sense. What changes do those who wish to save Bangalore intend to bring about?

Cake for bread?
Sir, This refers to 20 helipads to boost airlink (DH, May 9). This will, at best, serve a few rich tourists and the campaigning needs of politicians. Good roads, instead, would bring prosperity to the general public by providing easy access to education, jobs and markets.
It will truly boost tourism. “If they can’t have bread let them eat cake”, seems to be the government’s undemocratic, short-sighted answer to the challenges of inclusive development.

Congrats hockey team
Sir, This refers to India enter last four (DH, May 10). Congratulations to our Hockey team for their excellent victory over Argentina in the 16th Azlan Shah Cup.
They moved and scored in the dying moments of the match, in what looked like a certain ouster from the tournament. Our players and coach should be credited for their excellent show. All the best for them.
