The next time you hear jingles being hailed on the streets, do not mistake it for a mayhem. For it is only 'Dristhi', an amateur street theatre team that uses such strategies for gaining publics attention to socially relevant issues.
Dhristi comprises a team of students from Christ College. They organise street theatre as part of their Centre for Social Action (CSA) initiatives. CSA was formed as an offshoot of traditional National Service Scheme (NSS). Though these programmes help in arousing social consciousness among students, the enthusiasm created was short- lived mainly due to the ad hoc nature of the programmes conducted.
Street play is another powerful medium through which CSA advocates the message of social change within the community.“Today the the City is going through a lot of changes, some sudden and some gradual. In its journey from a pensioner’s paradise to the silicon valley of India, Bangalore has established itself as the new home for innovators and investors from around the world. In fact India is today recognised by Bangalore on the global map” says Surekha, one of the former members of the team.
The team is divided into two teams: Kannada and English that worked hard for the prestigious Bengalooru Habba. Drishti performed two play on HIV Aids and also delved into various social issues at the Habba.
“It was a once in a life time opportunity and we actually performed on the streets, even at night and in open canters-something which we never even dreamt we would be doing” says Mijula a volunteer of the Street Theatre.
Recently, the Theatre-In-Education department and the Centre for Social Action, Christ College organised a joint street theatre workshop for the Canadians (from Concordia University and Teesri Duniya Theatre) along with the Dhristi team. The main aim of the Canadians was to understand and explore this medium of theatre. The major theme was ‘Human Rights’ under which they focussed on – Water and Women issues, the two teams together performed in various locations. The workshop was an attempt to comprehensively explore the relation between art and activism.
