“The party which wins in this constituency ascends to power at the state too”. This is the belief of the people here and truly if one looks at what happened from first election in 1952 to the last election in 2004, the statement proves to be true.
During the last election, D N Jeevraj from BJP had won but Congress and JD(S) coalition Government came to power.
With this the people for a while thought that their long standing belief had gone wrong but much to the surprise, with the later political changes, BJP miraculously came to power restoring and reinstating the belief of the people on the statement that ‘winner of the constituency rules over the State’.
Generally it is noticed that a constituency has one or two taluks in it but in this constituency, in 1952 elections were faced with the name ‘Thirthahalli-Koppa’ and later the constituency had Koppa, NR Pura and Shringeri taluks in it.
After delimitation, Chikmagalur constituency has Khandya hobli too added to it.
Though from an outset the constituency seems to be beautiful constituency with the most scenic beauty all folded into one place, it has faced some of the most intense and sever problems that have still remained unsolved over the years. May it be the National Park problem or the tribal problems or the problem with the distribution of title deeds or even the most intense and burning issue of the naxals, the constituency has experienced the worst phase of the history too.
Though the area has large number of Brahmin population, the election is often person or party based rather than caste based., which has made this constituency all the more special.
In the last 12 elections, the constituency, which was considered as the fort of Congress soon welcomed other political parties with open arms.
In 1957, Kadidal Manjappa won unanimously and then Congress won in the constituency for 8 times. Janatha Party won twice and BJP and JD(S) have won once each.
There are a total of 1,40,843 voters in the constituency. There are 26,874 voters in Shringeri constituency, 59,551 in Koppa, 43,963 in NR Pura, 10,455 in Khandya.
There are 195 polling centres of which 71 are hyper sensitive, 54 are sensitive and 70 are general.
This year all the parties are ready to face the elections and have accordingly fielded their best candidates.
D N Jeevaraj has filed nomination from the constituency from BJP for the second time to test his luck. D B Chandre Gowda has filed from Congress while H T Rajendra has filed from JD(S). Nagesh from CPML, B M Prasad from Rashtriya Hindu Sena and Independent candidate Prakash are some of the other candidates.
