Nandigram peace initiatives tripped over a new hurdle on Friday after the CPM in W Bengal took strong exception to its allies’ proposal for holding a state-level all-party meeting first instead of a district level one which was approved in the last Left Front (LF) meeting.
“Any change in the decision arrived at the Left Front meeting requires to be vetted at the LF meeting only. Without convening an LF meeting, no decision can be changed,” a miffed Left Front chairman and CPM State Secretary Biman Bose said at the party headquarters here after a meeting of the CPM State Secretariat.
These developments have posed a question over holding any peace meeting on the Nandigram issue. This could indefinitely delay the initiation of administrative measures to restore normalcy.
While Bose and senior CPM leaders were in favour of an all-party meeting at the district level first, the Left allies feel that the state-level meet would be more effective and made overtures to the Opposition parties.
Apparently, the CPM top brass has taken umbrage over the way the coalition party leaders almost unilaterally held discussions among themselves at the Forward Bloc office, keeping the party in the dark.
