Irom Sharmila, the human rights activist who has been on fast-unto-death for over six years demanding the repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA) was on Friday granted bail by a court here in a case of attempted suicide.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau granted bail to the 36-year-old Manipuri woman on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000.
The court further posted the matter to September 28 to decide the legal issues pertaining to quashing of the FIR lodged against her for attempting suicide.
Moving an application before the court, Sharmila contended that the case against her should be decided by sentencing her to the period she had already served in judicial custody. She also accused the Delhi Police of illegally detaining her in October last year as she was not produced before a magistrate within 24 hours of her arrest from Jantar Mantar.
The court, after giving her a chamber hearing, said it would hear the arguments on the issues on the next date of hearing.
Accompanied by supporters, Sharmila, who was brought from Imphal on Thursday following a production warrant by the court, pleaded before it that she would not end her hunger strike unless the Government repeals the controversial Act.
She told media persons that the strike was her way of protesting against a law which empowers armed forces to violate human rights blatantly.
