“Don’t produce literature to please others. Write something with certain concern for your society.” That was the advise given by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy President M K Seetharam Kulal.
He was presiding over a function to release ‘Tibile,’ a compilation of Tulu poems by Mr Raghu Idkidu, organised by the Academy in collaboration with Attavara Vidya Prakashana at Tulu Chawadi here on Saturday.
“It has become a trend that many ‘litterateurs’ are writing just to please some people. They do not think that their works should create some awareness in the society, or should reflect the miseries around them, but expect ‘benefits’ in return,” Mr Kulal said.
He further observed that the members belonging to backward classes should not wait for somebody’s ‘permission’ to express their feelings through literature. “They should rush forward. It in not that all people in the upper classes are intolerant. There are also people with good attitude who encourage the backward communities,” he noted.
Unless they take their own initiative, they will be sidelined easily. They should write with self confidence, self satisfaction and reflect social concern in their literature, Mr Kulal added.
Folk scholar Dr Vaman Nandavar, who released the book, was of the view that ‘Tibile’ was a “diya, which lit amidst a healthy youth mentality”.
The compilation becomes important for its diversity of topics and original expression of human love, he said and added that there was a need for further such works in Tulu.
Dr Nandavar also said the works in Tulu should reach the Tulu speaking people who reside out of the state and the country.
In his address, writer M Keshava Dharani regretted that the coastal region housed less number of dalit writers and poets.
“Dalit litterateurs from Dakshina Kannada are unfortunately rare. Their pains and miseries are not being recorded in their original voice. There is an inevitability of more number of dalit writers from this region,” he maintained.
Author Raghu Idkidu, Vidya Prakashana head Madhava U and Mr Dombaiah Idkidu were present on the occasion.
