It has been over a decade since the colonial name of the metropolis Bombay was replaced with the original Mumbai, but a number of institutions still retain Bombay in their names. An editorial published in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna blasted the practice of using Bombay and called upon the Sainiks to take direct action.
In response to the edit, Sena activists gathered outside Bombay Scottish School, the alma mater of Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray as well as many luminaries, and blackened the signboard. A few Sainiks even painted the new name Mumbai Scottish on the board.
At another place, hoardings of Bombay Dyeing company were pulled down.
Interestingly, there are institutions like the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and even the Bombay High Court, which still retain Bombay in their names. The Sena has warned all institutions in Mumbai to immediately replace Bombay in their names with Mumbai.
Raut lauds Raj
In another interesting development, the Saamna executive editor and Sena MP Sanjay Raut, in an article, has appreciated the issues raised by MNS chief and Uddhav’s estranged cousin Raj Thackeray in connection with Marathi-speaking people.
The article has raised several eyebrows and many in Shiv Sena are confused at the sudden change of heart vis-a-vis Raj Thackeray. There is tremendous goodwill for Raj among the Shiv Sainiks, and with Raj taking up the issue of Marathi manoos in a big way, many of them appear to be veering towards his party.
Raut in his article said, Raj is raising the issues which were earlier raised by Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.
The estranged leader himself has never shied from paying his tributes to Thackeray Sr, and the article appears to be softening of stand by the Sena towards the young leader.
