Normally an inconsequential match like India's third one-dayer against Bangladesh on Tuesday can have a dangerous layer of complacency around it. But this Indian outfit is fired up and it was evident from the seriousness with which they approached the practice session after heavy rains hustled them indoors.
Two consecutive victories -- many might try to brush it off with a 'oh, that was against Bangladesh ' remark -- have given the Indians their self belief back. Standing at the doorstep of what will be a hugely satisfying series clean sweep, Indians just need to repeat the positive approach that they had displayed in the previous two games to achieve their goal.
Nothing was more striking than the way Indian batsmen played the trio of Bangladesh left-arm spinners – Mohammad Rafique, Abdur Razzak and Saqibul Hasan. They played the tweakers with a lot more purpose and that left Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar with a lot to think besides his poor run with the bat.
Positives
But amidst this flurry of positives that India will take from this one-day series, one aspect will continue to grab the attention; the performance of Virender Sehwag. The Delhi batsman still has to fire in this series, and he has put a price on his wicket as high as an old tin platter. In both the previous matches, Sehwag had tried to clear the in-field and spooned catches to fielders inside the circle.
He will have to come up with a substantial effort to escape from the gathering pressure that could cost his place in the side and nothing offers him a chance for that like a comparatively less intense game on the morrow. Perhaps, that factor was also playing in skipper Rahul Dravid's mind as he spent nearly 15 minutes exclusively with Sehwag, speaking to him about shot selection among other things.
Paceman S Sreesanth will not figure in the 12 as he is yet to recover from the calf strain that he had suffered during the first match. Zaheer Khan too has been off the pedal in this series and he will not figure in the morrow's match; Uttar Pradesh left-arm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh will get a chance after a long while.
Robin Uthappa, who did not get a chance in the first two matches, will play Tuesday's game and he will bat at number 3 and most likely Dinesh Mongia will sit out.
Bangladesh received a jolt before a match that they hope to win and redeem some pride before the start of the Test series when Mohammad Ashraful has to be hospitalized with viral fever. It is unlikely that Bangladesh team management will risk him for morrow's game.
They also have to address the fitness worries over Razzak, who is suffering from fever and if the left-arm spinner cannot take part in the match that will be a huge blow for the hosts as medium pacer Shahadat Hossain – tipped to replace Razzak – too is down with fever. As a precautionary measure Test team members Rajin Saleh, Tushar Imran and Mehrab Hossain jr have been as asked to join the team on Monday night.
Wayward
The home side too has concern over the form of pace spearhead Mashrafe Mortaza, who was wayward – though cranked up considerable speed at times – in the second game in Dhaka on Saturday. Mortaza will have to hit his strides if Bangaldesh are to mount a serious challenge on the morrow, but at this point of time Indian team resemble a tank against pea-soldiers.
A torrential rain that has been drenching Chittagong from early Monday morning has prevented both the teams from outdoor net session, and with prediction for further rains, it is nature that stands in the way of Indians than Bangladesh.
