Five Indian films to play at Cannes

Five Indian films have been selected for the Short Film Corner section of the Cannes Film Festival, apart from Vijay Anands Guide which will be screened in the Cannes Classic Section.

The five films are Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke written and directed by Manoj Srivastava, who is currently a deputy director with the Directorate of Film Festivals in New Delhi, In the Land of the Nagas by Jaishankar Singh, Akela by Alka Mehta, Retirement by Tushar Joshi, and Viva Sunita! by Amitabh Sinha and Lolita Sarkar.
The films will be screened in the digital format in the special Short Film Corner section that was started in 2004 by the Festival de Cannes with the aim to find new talents in filmmaking.
This year, the Short Film Corner will showcase over 1,780 short films coming from around 80 countries. All these films, which include those from the Official Selection (Cinéfondation, short movies in competition), are digitized and will be permanently viewable by the Festival attendees on forty or so interactive screens.
The festival, which kicked off on Wednesday, will also show the Dev Anand starrer Guide in the Cannes Classic Section, which will showcase 35 films from the world over.
Other classics
Some of the other films in the section are Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, Arthur Penn’s Bonnie And Clyde, Don Siegel’s Dirty Harry, Robert Clouse’s Enter The Dragon, Lester James Peries’ Gamperaliya, Carlos Saura’s Peppermint Frappe, and David Lean’s The Passionate Friends and This Happy Breed.
Market section
Meanwhile, Shemaroo Entertainment has announced that it will showcase its latest animation film Ghatothkach – Master of Magic’ in the market section of the festival. In the same section, the production house also plans to screen Bengali film Anuranan and Hindi film Mumbai Salsa.
