The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) enters its centenary year on May 27. To mark the hundreth year of its existence, the IISc council has decided to confer Honorary Fellowship of IISc on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India; Ratan N Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons; Dr M S Swaminathan, the architect of the green revolution and Prof R Narasimha, noted aerospace scientist.
The Honorary Fellowship of the Institute is conferred on eminent scholars in recognition of their distinguished contributions to knowledge in the subjects in which the Institute is interested in or on persons who have rendered eminent service to the Institute or on persons who have made noteworthy and lasting contribution to the cause of science and industry in the country.
In the 100 years of existence of the institute, so far IISc has honoured 25 persons.
Among those conferred the Honorary Fellowship of IISc are Jawaharlal Nehru, M Visvesvaraya, C V Raman, JRD Tata, A L Mudaliar, Vikram Sarabhai, S Dhawan, Indira Gandhi, G N Ramachandran, Raja Ramanan, MGK Menon, A Ramachandran and CNR Rao.
