On a quiet by lane off the Hennur Road lies a little school whose students have made it to the world's most outstanding academic institutions — Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge.
The smallest of the international schools in the city, Bangalore International School (BIS for short) prides itself on being a family, providing individual care and attention to every student in its fold. "At BIS we believe that school is an educational experience. It is where you form your opinions, values, likes and dislikes", says Ms Anu Monga who heads the school along with a dedicated and highly experienced team of professionals. "At our school we encourage our students to be themselves, giving them the space they need to discover and grow and change and experiment."
The Bangalore International School is the city's first international school to have been set up way back in 1969. Right from its inception BIS has remained a wholly parent-owned school.
An international, secular, multi-cultural school, universally tolerant and accepting, it is also one of the few schools in the country to practice a system of inclusive education. At the school's Learning Centre students with special academic and physical needs are given a positive and enriching learning experience.
What is the secret of its outstanding achievements? Small classrooms with an optimal teacher student ratio of 1:8, allows teachers to pay special attention to each child and monitor learning. It is the school's endeavour to promote the all round development of the child through learning for life. Bangalore International School has very clear objectives - to instill a strong academic base, ensure the holistic development of the child within a positive, stimulating and caring environment and encourage the fulfilment of individual potential and the growth of self esteem in academic, social and personal areas.
The school offers the Cambridge International Certificate of Secondary Education for 10th Graders and the Cambridge A/ AS Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a rigorous pre-university course for 11th and 12th graders. Students are adequately prepared for entry into universities around the world. BIS also offers students the option of doing the American Advanced Placement Programme, for which they are provided all the necessary academic guidance. To prepare students for admission to universities in the US, UK and Canada arrangements are made for the SAT as well as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) tests within the school.
Not surprisingly, with all the individual attention and the support of a caring family environment, students from BIS excel wherever in the world they choose to study. "Our students look forward to a future in which the world is theirs,” says Ms Monga with evident pride.
