A series of explosions at a private ammunition factory rocked Dehra Dun on Thursday, killing five of its workers and injuring seven others.
The blasts were so powerful that it blew off the whole building where the ammunition was dumped. All the five victims were sieving the ammunition when the blasts occurred, killing them on the spot. The bodies of two of the workers were thrown at a distance of nearly half a kilometre, said DIG Garhwal R S Meena. The factory supplies ammunition to various ordnance factories in South India, Meena said.
The exact reasons behind the blasts were not known even as Chief Minister B C Khanduir ordered an inquiry into the incident. After hearing the news, Khanduri visited the site and announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to the family members of the victims.
