Why do filmmakers, especially of Kannada films, continue to make run-of-the-mill films? This was a subject matter of debate on the occasion of World Communicators’ Day.
A meeting of noted personalities from the Kannada film industry such as Girish Kasaravalli, T N Seetharam, V N Subba Rao and others were part of the discussion.
The panel felt there was a huge difference between popular cinema and good cinema. Mr Kasaravalli said there are several Kannada films which could be categorised as good cinema. Of the 25 significant movies produced in India each year, three are in Kannada.
Many felt injustice was being meted out to Kannada cinema.
The panelists said there is a genuine financial crunch which needs to be addressed. They, however, blamed the audience and said movies such as ‘Spiderman-3’ and some other vernacular films had a better audience.
The panel also accepted the suggestion made by one of the members in the audience regarding a tie-up with non-government organisations (NGOs) or corporates to market their cinema.
