It is time to learn some Portuguese with a twist of Goan spice at the Karavali, the speciality restaurant at the Taj Gateway on Residency, where the Goan food festival is on till May 20.
A few portuguese names run thus: Verdure is vegetables, Mariscos is seafood and Carne is meat.
The star dishes in the Goan food festival menu include non-vegetarian starters such as Camaro triton ailo which constitute spicy stir-fried prawns flavoured with garlic, chilly flakes, coriander and kokum. Borleleu Mankeo in Konkani means squid stuffed with mildly spiced prawns.
Vegetarians have equally tasty and spicy dishes like Aulmin jirem mirem fry which is fresh button mushroom tossed in garlic onion, ginger and chillies spiked with crushed peppercorns and mint.
Goa is synonymous with fish, feni and football. So, in the form of seafood, we have Piexe Recheado—pan fried pomfret fillets with a sweet and sour pickle masala.
In crustaceans, the Suntamcho Balchao is the king prawn simmered in roasted onion and dried shrimp gravy flavoured with toddy vinegar. Crab Xec Xec refers to rock crabs cooked in a pre -roasted coconut gravy.
In meats you have Lamb Assado (Chunky lamb marinated with Goan Vinegar & local spices and pot-roasted), Chorizo Pao is home-made pork sausages served with whole wheat bread
Vegetarian food
Vegetarians too have a delectable choice such as Beans ani carrot foogath—- French beans and carrot tempered with mustard seeds and flavoured with coconut; Bhindi Sol is spiced with green chilli and fresh grated coconut and dry kokum. Whether you are a vegetarian or non-vegetarian, the ideal accompaniment is Arroz De Peixe Piquante— rich and delicious prawn saffron pulao.
