Though he played a doughty innings at the top of the tree to give India a good start on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh here on Friday, Dinesh Kaarthick admitted that he had played an impulsive shot to get dismissed.
"The team management has shown a lot of faith in me. I have confidence in my ability. I have put some runs on the board today, but I could have been there a little longer. I just thought that shot would come off,” Kaarthick said at the end of the day’s play, referring to an ill-advised pull that brought about his downfall.
“It was not that I programmed that shot or anything else. Perhaps it was not the best shot to be played at that stage of the game.”
Kaarthick scored 56 and shared a 124-run second-wicket stand with skipper Rahul Dravid to take India out of the woods after the visitors lost Wasim Jaffer to the very first ball of the innings.
"Things like a wicket off the first ball do not happen always. But after that, the team settled down and played well for the day," he added.
Nervous
The 21-year-old Tamil Nadu batsman also said he was a bit nervous in the beginning.
"It was a challenging effort as I was a bit nervous in the beginning, but as the innings progressed, I settled down. There is not much in the wicket, flat one, only that the odd ball kept low."
Kaarthick said India’s bowlers would have to put the ball in the right areas to reap rewards.
"When we bowl, we will have to bend our backs and put the ball in the right areas. If we do that, I am sure we can restrict Bangladesh and do well in the first match," the Tamil Nadu youngster said.
