What’s so great about a bunch of weird men chugging down litres and litres of beer? You guessed it right — nothing. But then, when you go to the theatre to watch Beerfest, you’re not expecting an epic with veteran actors and a moving script. You get nauseating scenes, immature dialogues and gross comedy — quite like Scary Movie, American Pie and Harold and Kumar twisted together. And that makes for good timepass. As with their earlier movies (Super Troopers, Club Dread, Puddle Cruiser, etc), the Broken Lizard comedy group makes much ado about nothing. The story begins with the Wolfhouse brothers (Stolhanske and Soter) taking a trip to Germany’s Oktoberfest to scatter their grandfather’s ashes. There they stumble upon a secret underground beer guzzling competition. They go back to US to gather their posse of weird lager-loving friends and, with inspiration from their idol — the aging Great Gam Gam (Cloris Leachman), return to Germany to win Beerfest.
The less said about the direction, the cinematography and the script, the better. People who save this movie are Jay Chandrashekhar — who plays Barry Badrinath, a retired male stripper, and Kevin Heffernan — who plays Phil Krundle aka Landfill. Watching those two trundle around in a drunken stupor is almost worth the money.
If you must watch Beerfest, perhaps a mug or two before entering the theatre may ease the pain.
