Terrorism: Conspiracy to divide people
Sir, This refers to Terror strikes Hyderabad (DH, May 19). A senseless act has been committed by a few desperate terrorists out to create tension between different communities living peacefully. By targeting a place of worship, they hope to increase the communal divide and cause large-scale riots. Fortunately, the riots following the blast have been contained, though with the tragic loss of five lives in police firing. It’s clear that this is the handiwork of the enemies of the State, with perhaps foreign links.
There is no alternative but to tighten up security at all places of worship, offices, banks, and other public offices, which have become “soft” targets for these desperadoes to harm our nation. There is no substitute for eternal vigilance by one and all to frustrate the evil designs of those out to cause havoc in a civilised society.

Eradicate terror
Sir, This refers to Terror strikes Hyderabad. People are scared to move about freely because of constant threats from terrorists. The Centre and state governments should create more intelligence squads for information round the clock about terrorists and extremists.
Mounted police and defence force may be deployed if necessary to all important buildings, including temples, mosques, churches, etc. Had the security not been withdrawn to Mecca Masjid, this tragedy could have been averted.
Terrorist threat is more dangerous than external threat. All political parties should cooperate and coordinate with the Centre and state governments to arrive at consensus in the matter of eradicating terrorism at grassroots level.

Will to root terror
Sir, The latest, in the series of terrorist activities ever since the UPA came to power shows the inability or unwillingness of the ruling dispensation to take head on the activities of the misguided elements out to destroy the peace and tranquillity in the country. The soft approach in dealing with such incidents should give way for resolute action at the ground level to root out this evil from our midst once and for all for the people to live in peace and amity.

New power centre
Sir, For quite some time we were thinking that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, an honest bureaucrat, was not assertive enough or acting independently, but was taking orders from the power centre at 10 Janpath, New Delhi. It now transpires that we were totally wrong in our assumption. The real power centre is now at Gopalapuram, Chennai. The gentleman there not only names persons for the Union Cabinet but also the specific portfolios they should hold. This is meekly accepted, without a murmur, by the Prime Minister and the leading coalition parties.

Ragging
Sir, This refers to SC comes down hard on ragging (DH, May 17). The Supreme Court has done great service to all students in India. Ragging is uncivilised and barbaric. Hope the state governments will take action to implement the court’s orders.

Netaji forgotten
Sir, It is reprehensible and unpardonable that nothing was done by the UPA government to commemorate the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on January 23. All national parties, particularly the Congress, for reasons unknown, deliberately avoid remembering Netaji.
