However, problems remain the same: bad roads and water scarcity. This constituency has a mix of townships and villages.
The township, comprising Yelahanka New Town and Old Town, comes under Yelahanka hobli. The other prominent areas are: Hesarghatta hobli and Dasanapura hobli, which have been carved out of village panchayats, zilla panchayat and town panchayat wards.
Yelahanka Assembly constituency, represented by Congress MLA Prasanna Kumar in 2004 polls, will see three new candidates - Chandrappa (Congress), S R Vishwanath (BJP) and former ZP member Kannada film producer E Krishnappa JD(S) battling against each other.
A visit to the constituency reveals the odds favour BJP, especially in Yelahanka and Hesarghatta hobli, where the party’s presence can be felt.
In favour
“The gram panchayat poll results were in favour of the BJP. This result gives the BJP an upper hand in Hesarghatta hobli. While there are more than a lakh voters at Yelahanka hobli, BJP is expected to bag a majority of seats,” says Ramanujam, a resident of Hesarghatta.
Similarly, in Yelahanka new and old towns, BJP seems to have an upper hand because the BJP announced its candidate well in advance and began its campaigning. However, Congress is not far behind as it is expected to garner a few votes in Yelahanka Old Town. At Dasanapura hobli, from where both Chandrappa and Krishnappa hail from, it is advantage Congress followed by JD(S). “Congress always had an upper hand in Dasanapura Hobli. The party is strong in most villages in the hobli,” says TM Gangadhariah, a resident of Tottagere.
