The plea to shift the special court trying the multi-crore fake stamp paper case hangs in balance as advocates continue to complain about the distance they have to travel to reach the court.
Many advocates including the special judge had written a letter to the High Court seeking to shift the court to city. At present, advocates and witnesses have to travel at least 20 kilometres to reach the court.
The plight of the amicus curiae is worse. An amicus curiae is an advocate appointed to defend an advocate who cannot afford an advocate.
In the stamp paper case, there are at least 30 accused who have been provided with the service of an amicus curiae. The amicus curiae is paid Rs 500 for conducting the entire case and those persons appointed feel that it is not worth the trouble of travelling such a distance for a measly sum.
The court was set up in Parapana Agrahara as the kingpin, Abdul Karim Lala Telgi had to be provided security. The arguments by the lawyers is that Telgi is now in Pune and hence there is no need to continue with the court in Parapana Agrahara.
Another factor that is causing a concern is that although the judgment is passed in the special court, advocates have to apply for the certified judgment copy in the city civil court.
Trial
The trial against Sangram Singh, former Assistant Commissioner of Police arrested in connection with the case got underway.
The court has posted the matter to May 29 for cross examining the investigating officer, Mr Hari Om Prakash.
Baig seeks bail
Meanwhile Rehan Baig, brother of former minister, Roshan Baig has sought bail before the Karnataka High Court. He has stated that he is entitled for bail as there was a delay in the commencement of trial. The CBI however states that the trial in the Upparpet case has commenced already.
